Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the effects of married counselors¡¯ empathy on their familial health.
Methods: The empathic ability scale and the family health scale were administered to 173 couples of counselors residing around Busan metropolitan city. Data on couples were averaged and analyzed using correlation and regression analysis.
Results: Correlation analysis showed that counselors¡¯ empathic ability and its subfactors (except for fantasy) were significantly positively correlated with familial health and its subfactors. Multiple regression analysis showed that monthly average income, employment in counseling centers, absence of supervision, and two subfactors of empathic ability (empathic concern & personal distress) had significant effects on the familial health and its subfactors.
Conclusions: Emotional factors alone of married counselors¡¯ empathy had significant effects on their familial health. The implications and suggestions for further research and practice were discussed.
